The annual Daily Mail Greenleaf Awards took place on 17 May 2002

The annual Daily Mail GreenLeaf Awards celebrated the very best in new housing landscapes at a ceremony on 17 May 2002. The industry awards which have proved extremely successful, this year doubled the amount of entries from 2000.

Launched in 1987 by the New Homes Marketing Board, The GreenLeaf Housing Awards celebrate the very best new housing landscapes each year. The awards have helped improve standards in the house building industry and have also raised house buyers’ expectations by highlighting just how good new housing can be. The 2001 awards attracted around 150 entries, almost double the number in 2000.

The GreenLeaf judging panel is chaired by Professor Chris Baines, a well-respected environmentalist, writer and broadcaster who advises the government and many other organisations on environmental matters.

“With a dramatic increase in the number of entries it is pleasing to report that the quality of the successful schemes was as high as ever,” said Professor Baines at the presentation ceremony. “We set out 15 years ago to celebrate the best examples of the role that the landscape plays in successful new housing and this year’s portfolio of schemes is a tremendous credit to the house building industry. All the judges were impressed by the diversity of projects, the geographical spread of the entries, and the very clear demonstration of the value that house builders and home owners place on the quality of the space between and around their homes.”

A new initiative – the GreenLeaf standard – was also launched at the presentation ceremony. While developments must have been established for at least three years before being considered for a GreenLeaf award, the new GreenLeaf standard enables developers to embrace the GreenLeaf principles while creating their current developments.
