Airports must be able to operate within a safe environment. To do so it is vital that proposed development on or around an airport that might impact on airport operations, particularly obstacles or hazards is carefully regulated.
Each airport is responsible for ensuring its own safe and efficient operations, as well as being vigilant in preventing inappropriate development. Other aeronautical stakeholders may also have an interest in protecting their own assets from potential obstructions or inappropriate development.
Local planning authorities have an important role to play in this safeguarding process. The National Planning Policy Framework makes clear that authorities should protect critical infrastructure including airports.
