HBF comments on water efficiency consultation

25 July, 2006

Responding to the announcement of the Government’s consultation into water efficiency, Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman of the Home Builders Federation (HBF), says:

"HBF welcomes the announcement of this consultation. Home builders are already working hard to improve the water efficiency of new build, but also recognise that further strides in this direction are needed.

“We welcome both the announcement of a longer consultation period and the focus on existing stock as well as new build. The practicality of the Government’s proposals will need to be assessed when published, and we look forward to making our own constructive suggestions for consideration. Given the poorer efficiency of existing homes compared with new homes, it is important to ensure they make their appropriate contribution to the overall objective."

Notes for Editors

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) is the principal trade federation for private sector home builders and voice of the home building industry in England and Wales. The HBF’s 300 member firms account for over 80% of all new homes built in England and Wales in any one year, and include companies of all sizes, ranging from multi-national, household names through regionally based businesses to small local companies. www.hbf.co.uk

All new homes are now built with water meters and home builders have taken the lead in installing water-saving fittings to new homes.

The Government’s Water Efficiency consultation has been announced jointly by the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) and the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

The consultation document will be published later in the year, with a period of four months being allowed for responses to be submitted.
