HBF launch curriculum materials for schools

22 July, 2002

An exciting new resource for Key Stage 2 and 3 teachers will be launched by HBF this autumn.

Whether your pupils live in a flat or a farmhouse, a maisonette or a mansion, a lot of knowledge went into building their homes:

Geography

Maths

Design and technology

ICT

Science

Education for sustainable development

Citizenship

Careers development.

Developing new housing is a rich source of material for pupils at all levels. Who decides what a new development looks like and where it should be built? What impact will it have on the environment and local community? How are houses built and who does the work? The House Builders Federation has produced two exciting new CD ROMs to help your pupils find out.

The Building Blocks CD ROM introduces children at KS2 to a range of activities related to the construction industry. By asking them to think about the processes involved in developing a piece of land and building a house, they learn more about:

shape, space and measures

materials and their use

people who work in the industry

houses and living conditions around the world

sustainable development.

Easy to use either by individuals or small groups, the CD ROM is packed with useful information, colourful images and challenging on-screen activities.

In Building on Success, KS3 pupils develop a piece of land for housing and complete a number of tasks related to:

consumer research

evaluating public opinion

costing and planning

project management.

Targeted to meet National Curriculum guidelines for Geography and Careers, this resource will also be particularly useful for teachers delivering classes in Citizenship and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It addresses key questions about the ways in which development impacts on the community and the environment and asks pupils to examine a range of moral and social issues that are relevant to their own communities.

Building Blocks or Building on Success are free.
