HBF - New housing growth targets meaningless without action on land supply

18 July, 2007

Responding to the publication of the Review of Sub-national Economic Development and Regeneration by the Government today, the Home Builders Federation have welcomed the Government's commitment to increase housing supply and the explicit requirement to issue regional plans for housing growth.

However, further action on increasing land supply should be the cornerstone of the Government's Housing Green Paper.

Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman of the Home Builders Federation, says:

"We still await progress on proposals for a Housing and Planning delivery grant in the spending review. With or without more incentives, local authorities will only meet the new housing targets if they tackle the land supply issue proactively.  Confidence in mechanisms for delivering sufficient land supply to meet communities' needs remains the acid test for solving our housing affordability problems."
