HBF responds to Government launch of compulsory energy rating for homes

14 June, 2006

Responding to today’s announcement that the Government is launching a compulsory energy rating for homes to help cut carbon emissions, John Slaughter, Director of External Affairs at the Home Builders Federation says:

"Home builders have been working hard to improve the energy efficiency of new homes. Under the latest revision of building regulations, new homes will be 40% more energy efficient than those built five years ago, and they are as much as six times more energy efficient than their Victorian and Edwardian counterparts.

"We need to build more homes to address the current housing supply and consequent affordability problem. Energy performance certificates should help demonstrate that building new homes can contribute to meeting the climate change challenge at the same time as meeting peoples' housing needs."
