HBF Welcomes Industry Response to Prescott’s £60,000 Challenge

10 August, 2005

Seven of the nine organisations selected to bid for publicly-owned sites designated for development are private house builders. To reach the final of the Design for Manufacture competition, they have successfully demonstrated that high-quality homes can be designed for a construction cost of around £60,000 – a challenge laid down by the Deputy Prime Minister at the Labour Party Conference in September 2004.

Alex Hunter, Spokesman for the Home Builders Federation (HBF), says:

"The Home Builders Federation welcomes the news that housebuilders are meeting the challenge laid down by the Deputy Prime Minister to provide practical solutions to affordability issues.

“The HBF has long argued that the long term problem of undersupply in the housing market can only be met by a sustained increase in supply."
