We have been working with the three largest specialist retirement developers on a new programme of research and campaign activity to make the case for a greater supply of housing for older people. The campaign has been branded Homes for Later Living. This report, first of three for the campaign, highlights the better health and wellbeing outcomes for older people who live in retirement housing and provides a strong evidence base for the significant savings to public expenditure and health and social care that could be achieved by increasing supply to meet the estimated demand of 30,000 retirement homes a year. If this level of supply was achieved for 10 years, the total saving to health and social care spending provided by the benefits of retirement housing would amount to £2.1 billion a year.
