Innovations on trial

7 February, 2006

The Home Builders Federation and Construction Products Association new Innovate For Homes scheme encourages house-builders to assess innovative new products from UK-wide suppliers.

These days, the UK house-building industry is increasingly driven by the need to find new and innovative products that are environmentally conscious, safer to work with and more cost-effective - which is why a new Innovate For Homes scheme has been set up as a joint initiative between the Home Builders Federation and the Construction Products Association for the benefit of both home-builders and product suppliers.

"This initiative allows suppliers to submit innovative new products for trial by some of the UK's leading house-builders," says Dave Mitchell from Home Builders Federation's Product Assessment team. "Initially, we and the Construction Products Association will examine product submissions from suppliers, judging them on a number of criteria. Successful entries will then be presented to a House-Builder Assessment Panel - and if they accept the product, then it can be fully tested in situ."

The four main judgement criteria used by the joint Construction Products Association-Home Builders Federation submissions panel are Energy Saving, Sustainable Benefits (including natural resource management), Value for Money and Health & Safety Benefits.

The Innovate For Homes scheme will be promoted to the supplier members of the Construction Products Association and Home Builders Federation, although it is also available to other outside suppliers who believe they have innovative new products that could improve standards within the house-building industry.

"We're actively encouraging all house-builders to contact us direct if they want to be involved," says John Tebbit of the Construction Products Association, "and for suppliers, they'll initially need to visit the website and follow a series of simple steps."

House builders wanting to be involved in the Innovate for Homes scheme can contact:

1) Dave Mitchell, Home Builders Federation on 0207 960 1612; innovateforhomes@hbf.co.uk

2) John Tebbit, Construction Products Association on 0207 323 3770; innovateforhomes@constprod.org.uk

Suppliers wanting to submit a product for assessmen should complete an entry form available on the Home Builders Federation or Construction Products Association websites (www.hbf.co.uk or www.constprod.org.uk).

Once the form has been completed and returned, you will be informed if details of your product have been forwarded to the House-Builder Assessment Panel.
