WHAT DOES YOUR DEPARTMENT DO?

The Group Commercial Department develops and maintains group standards in respect of apartment designs and standard methods of build. It undertakes research and development for the group to ensure we are building in the most cost effective and regulation compliant way at all times. We also negotiate national purchasing agreements with major suppliers. The department checks and approves all construction budgets, and agrees annual prices with the regions to control build cost increases. The department is the main contact for a variety of external agencies including NHBC, HBF, DCLG, etc.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

My responsibility is to coordinate the activities of all the disciplines within Group Commercial. To ensure all standard information is up to date. I am responsible for ensuring the regions adhere to company policy and standards and to chair specialist meetings of regional staff. I am also in charge of the in-house crane company which supplies cranes, plant, equipment and accommodation to all operational sites.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CAREER?

I started in architecture and fell into the commercial role as a result of a slump in the industry. Knowing what I know now, I would have opted for this career.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DID YOU NEED TO GET THIS JOB?

Nothing set in stone, however a good degree in building management would be beneficial. Membership of RICS would also be an advantage.

Try to visit a company and shadow the commercial team to understand the variety which the job can give.
