Starting to Live Differently

19 December, 2003

This document is a review of the Assembly’s Sustainable Development Scheme. A number of minor amendments are proposed to the existing document but none of these changes are fundamental. The main change is that an action plan is to be produced alongside the Scheme setting out the key sustainability challenges Wales is facing and priority areas that need addressing. Making the planning system more proactive and developing ’flagship’ physical projects and converting good examples of best practice into the norm are two actions of interest to house builders. The HBF will prepare a response on behalf of members requesting that housing is considered more broadly. Issues such as ensuring that everyone has the opportunity for a decent home and the need to reduce the unfit housing stock need to be addressed. Focusing on energy efficiency measures in new homes and building to lifetime home standards (both mentioned as part of the former action points) is not the answer.
