Waste: new legislation

8 July, 2004

Over five million tonnes of hazardous waste is produced each year in England and Wales, half of which is disposed of in landfill sites. The Landfill Directive comes into force on 16th July 2004.

It is no longer be possible to dispose of hazardous waste with non hazardous waste. Only 10 to 15 landfill sites will be able to accept commercial hazardous waste, compared to over 240 in 2001.

It is estimated that this will reduce the landfill capacity for hazardous (special) waste by half. HBF is concerned that brownfield remediation targets will be jeopardised by the current lack of alternative options.

If you are experiencing problems please contact sian.lewis@hbf.co.uk (HBF Technical) as we are currently talking to Defra, the EA and ODPM about how to mitigate the effects of this.
