Miller Homes is developing more than new homes around the country. It is developing skilled trades people through its highly acclaimed apprenticeship programme.
The North West region of Miller Homes introduced its Apprenticeship Training Programme in 2001 as part of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) programme that awards NVQ level 2 and 3 qualifications.
Since 2001, Miller Homes North West has seen 23 trainees qualify to NVQ level 2. The two year programme can be extended for a further year to achieve NVQ level 3 qualification. Beyond this the apprentices can find the scheme has provided a fast track into management.
Six years on and Ian Lively, Contracts Manager and Apprenticeship Co-ordinator at Miller Homes North West is pleased with the results. Ian said: Our apprenticeship programme is helping young people get a head start in the industry. There is a shortage of skilled people in housebuilding, so anyone who can demonstrate their ability will progress quickly in their chosen trade or into management. With the raising of standards, introduction of new techniques, materials and technology, house building is fast becoming a profession and there are good rewards for people who have ability and can demonstrate it.
Three apprenticeships have just been awarded in Kersal, Salford on a joint initiative between Miller Homes, Inspired Developments, New Deal for Communities [NDC] and Salford City Council and will run over 10 years.
Ann-Marie Pickup, Chair of the NDC Board, said: Its great that we can work in partnership with our local school and house building partners on these apprenticeships. I feel that it is really important to put something back into the community by supporting these local young people, who can help to change the shape of where they live.
