'How to avoid a construction catastrophe'

A new interactive educational game has been produced by the HBF to create awareness of the dangers within a building site and educate children between 8 and 11 years of age against entering sites where they live.

This is the first interactive game of its kind and has been put together by Crucial Crew who specialise in safety workshops and interactive games for school children in the UK. The project was funded by the Major House Builders Group and managed by a HBF Health and Safety Working Group.

The game was developed in recognition of the fact that many building sites these days are on brownfield land, which children may once have played on, and near to existing housing. The main aim of the game is to teach children to keep out of building sites and whilst the game’s intention is to make it clear that children should not enter a site in any circumstances, in order to illustrate effectively the risks on site and the dangers to them, the narrative uses a group of children looking for a lost cat. The cat jumps around from place to place, hiding and running away, and as the children chase after it they face various hazards.

Benefits of the game

Using this game could have a number of benefits including:

  • Supporting work on Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Generating positive PR coverage
  • Building relationships with local children, teachers and the wider community
  • Demonstrating commitment to health and safety
  • Helping to reduce accidents and save young lives

How to use the game

Practical suggestions for using the game include: -

On your website

  • Build the resources available on your website by including a copy of the game for teachers to download. Teachers will find this particularly useful during PSHE lessons. The game covers Key Stages 2 and 3.

Within your company

  • Promote the game and awareness of its potential to those such as health and safety and marketing/pr personnel likely to be able to make direct use of it.

Within your local area/community

  • Issue a press release locally/regionally to make local schools aware of the game.

  • Consider contacting your local schools/teachers to build awareness of the availability of the game.

  • Perhaps organise to go into a school to show teachers the game or hold a classroom workshop.
