Member Briefing - 'Project Barker'

14 Apr, 2004

To keep HBF members up to date with progress on the implementation of the Barker Review recommendations, and the HBF’s Barker Review activity, the Federation will issue periodic updates.

Why are houses built to a particular design? What do homes in other parts of the world look like - and why are they different to ours? What materials are used in their construction? How are houses built - and who does the work?

The House Builders Federation has produced an exciting new CDROM to help your pupils find out.

'Building Blocks' introduces children at Key Stage 2 to a range of activities related to the housebuilding industry. By asking them to think about developing a piece of land and building a house, you encourage them to learn more about:

shape, space and measures

people who work in the industry

sustainable development

materials and their use

houses and living conditions around the world

Easy to install and operate, you can use 'Building Blocks' with a group of children, or let them work on it alone. The choice is yours. The CDROM is packed with useful information, colourful images and challenging on-screen activities.

'Building Blocks' supports the National Curriculum at Key Stage 2 across a range of subjects including:

geography

design and technology

science

maths

ICT

By encouraging pupils to think about how our lives impact on the environment, 'Building Blocks' also offers a useful starting point for meeting the new guidelines for PHSE and Education for Sustainable Development.
