Member Briefing - ‘Project Barker’

11 May, 2004

To keep HBF members up to date with progress on the implementation of the Barker Review recommendations, and the HBF’s Barker Review activity, the Federation will issue periodic updates.

Housebuilding companies require highly skilled management. The managing director is the most senior member of staff, responsible for the day-to-day running of the whole company. S/he will inevitably have worked in the housebuilding industry for a number of years, working their way up through several promotions to reach this position.

Reaching the top in the housebuilding industry is not dependent on any specific qualifications. Managing directors currently in the industry could have started at the age of 16 as a trainee, as a graduate land-buyer or as an experienced civil engineer. With commitment and aptitude there are no barriers to reaching the top of the housebuilding industry, whatever your background.

"I am responsible for managing all aspects of the business, from identifying suitable land and arranging for its purchase through to aftersales and customer care. I also have administrative responsibilities within the company, including dealing with personnel and accounts.

"You need a positive attitude and a disciplined approach to problem-solving for this job. Much of my work involves dealing with other people, so communication skills (including being a good listener) are important, as well as plenty of commonsense and a willingness to get involved.

"Every day is different. I spend time both in the office and on site, and I am in contact with a wide range of people at different levels of the company. Within the housebuilding industry, situations and markets are constantly changing so you have to be adaptable to change and keen to keep moving forward.

Christopher Crook, managing director, Countryside
